Winds of Change

by Catherine Giordano

I received the following in an email. I've received it before. I don't send these kind of emails to 20 people because people get enough email.  Instead, I decided to put it on the blog where thousands can see it. What the initiators of this post forget is that these things can't become law until Congress votes it into law. When pigs fly!

It's too bad we can't do a citizens referendum to add an ammendment to the constituition.
Congressional Reform Act of 2013

1.  No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.

 2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

 4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

 5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

 6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/31/13. The American people did not make this contract with Congress- men/women. Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Don't you think it's time?

P.S. I would amend to point 4 to say Congress gets the same increase as the Cost of Living increase that Social Security recipients get, but only once every six years.  They are already paid very well and that 3% a year will add up really fast.

The Politics of Raising Taxes

by Catherine Giordano

It's been a few weeks with no political posts. Today, I saw a letter to the editor in the Orlando Sentinel about taxing the rich to increase the prosperity of the United States. I couldn't resist turning it into a poem. I had already done my poem for the day so this is a bonus poem.

Raising Taxes

Higher taxes?
I’m fine with that.

Higher taxes on the wealthy
are important to prosperity.

We are a more cohesive society
when the gap between rich and poor
is not as enormous as it is today.

Extreme inequality
is the way
of banana republics—
not our democracy.

Higher taxes for me
and my family—
Bring ‘em on.

News Print Platform

News print poetry uses newspaper stories to create poems. This year, a lot of stories were about the 2012 election. That makes this blog a platform for me to advocate for my political views.

On this Election Day eve, I thought it would be interesting to link to the political poems I did this year. Even if you only read the titles, it’s the “year in review.” (Click on the titles to go to the webpage with the poem on it.

. . . And the Pony is Lame

Yesterday I said newspapers are the Pony Express of the Internet age.  Today, I add "and the pony is lame".

The annoucemnet of Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as his running mate is yesterday's news.  A small headline only one column wide, no mention of Ryan's name in the headline, no picture.  At least it was on page one--but less than 3 inches.  A story abut campaign finances got more inches. The Ryan story continued on page 4, but claimed only about a half page. And that was it.

It made it hard for me to find material for my poem. I had to write about Ryan. It is a significant event for the 2012 election, and my mission is to write a poem for all significant events.

Newspapers: The Pony Express of the Internet Age

I hate it when really big news breaks after the Orlando Sentinel has gone to press. Romney announced that Paul Ryan will be his VP pick this morning, but I can't do my poem about it because it is not in the newspaper.  I expect it is up on the Sentinel's website, but my rules say I can only use what is in the newspaper.  So tune in tommorrow.  I'm sure there will be lots about it in tommorrow's paper.

This blog is supposed to be about poetry, but I can't resist commenting on politics. I don't get it. Why Ryan? Does Romney need to convince the base that his flip flops are sincere and he really is a severe conservative now in order to rally the base?  But the base is already fired up by their hatred of Obama. Romney needs to woo Independents. Ryan will allinate them. Romney should have played it safe with Portman. The Democrat politicos are thrilled with the selection of Ryan.

I think Romney chose Ryan just because he likes him.

And he made his pick early because he really needs the help. Perhaps we'll all be talking about Ryan instead of Romney's taxes for a few days.
